does exercise improve your hair

Can a Good Sweat Session Actually Improve Your Hair?

Yes, exercise directly improves hair health through three mechanisms. Increased circulation brings oxygen and nutrients to the follicles, lower cortisol reduces stress related shedding, and steady hormone regulation supports the growth cycle. At The Bespoke Crown, we help active Omaha women protect their hair during workouts through smart prep, tension free styling, and post workout care that avoids the damage from daily washing. You do not have to choose between fitness and hair health because you can absolutely have both with the right protective routine.

Hi, I am Angela Olander, owner and master stylist at The Bespoke Crown in Omaha, with more than twenty years of experience helping active women maintain strong, healthy hair while still pursuing their fitness goals. I specialize in protective routines for clients with extensions, thinning hair, or scalp sensitivity who want to stay active without compromising their hair restoration progress. This focus started back in 2012 when I kept seeing the same pattern in my chair and I remember it clearly because it shocked me. My most fitness focused clients were experiencing the worst breakage and traction alopecia from their workout habits. It broke my heart because the damage was completely preventable. That realization changed everything about how I teach hair care today.

How Exercise Directly Supports Hair Health

Better circulation. Lower stress. Balanced hormones. Exercise delivers all three. And here is why that matters for your hair.

When you move your body, your blood flow increases and that circulation acts like a nutrient delivery service straight to your scalp. It brings oxygen, iron, zinc, and protein directly to your follicles. This support helps your follicles stay in their active growth phase longer. Many women do not realize how strongly blood flow influences hair, but I see the difference every week in my active clients.

Lower cortisol is another major factor. Know what most active women do not realize? Chronic stress can trigger telogen effluvium, which is a sudden shift of hair into the shedding phase. Movement is one of the fastest ways to lower cortisol naturally, and when your stress drops, your follicles stay calmer and more stable.

Moderate exercise also helps rebalance your hormones. You do not need intense workouts or hours of training. In fact, extreme exercise can cause the opposite effect, but a consistent routine of movement creates internal balance that directly supports fuller, healthier hair.

And here is the encouraging part. Any movement helps. A twenty minute walk with your dog through Armbrust Acres, a gentle yoga class, or a bike ride near Zorinsky Lake all count. You do not need perfection for your hair to benefit. You just need consistency.

Protecting Your Hair When You Work Out

Now let us talk about the part most women never think about. Sweat is not the enemy. Friction, tension, and over washing are.

Before You Start Moving

A little preparation goes a long way. A light mist of dry shampoo at your roots helps absorb sweat as it forms, which buys you more time between washes. A small amount of leave in conditioner on your mid lengths and ends acts as a protective barrier against salt in your sweat. (Salt can be incredibly drying on finer hair.)

Many clients are surprised when I tell them that their pre workout routine matters just as much as their post workout routine. I see this mistake constantly. Women head into workouts with dry ends, tight ponytails, or no barrier against sweat and then wonder why their hair feels brittle.

Choosing the Right Workout Hairstyle

Think tight ponytails are harmless? They are not. Daily tension is one of the fastest ways to trigger traction alopecia, especially around the temples.

Instead, choose gentler styles that reduce tension. A loose low braid keeps your hair contained without pulling at your scalp. A low bun secured with a soft scrunchie or coil tie gives your hair support while avoiding unnecessary strain. A cloth headband keeps your hair off your face with zero tension. (Most of my extension clients choose scrunchies because they are far more protective than elastic bands.) Even this simple switch reduces stress on your follicles.

If You Swim for Exercise

Chlorine. Salt water. UV exposure. A tough combination for any hair type, but especially for women with extensions or thinning hair.

Before you get into a pool or lake, wet your hair with clean water and add a layer of conditioner or hair oil. Your hair acts like a sponge and if it is already full of clean water, it cannot absorb as much chlorine or salt. A silicone swim cap is always the best choice if you swim regularly. Many active clients do not realize their hair is absorbing chlorine far faster than they think.

Your Post Workout Refresh

Now comes the part that surprises most women. You do not need to shampoo after every workout. In fact, daily shampooing causes far more damage than sweat.

Let your hair down immediately after your workout so your scalp can breathe. If you are drenched, rinse your scalp with water only. No shampoo. This clears salt and sweat without stripping natural oils. If you are only lightly sweaty, use a blow dryer on a cool setting to quickly dry the roots. Once the roots are fully dry, apply dry shampoo. (Applying dry shampoo to damp hair creates a paste and I see this mistake all the time.)

Finish with a gentle scalp massage to stimulate circulation and prevent buildup around the follicles.

Small steps. Big impact.

Real Women, Real Active Lifestyle Transformations

Seraphina from The Ridges

Seraphina runs five miles daily around Zorinsky Lake and was noticing thinning at her temples. During consultation I saw the culprit immediately. She wore the same tight, high ponytail every day. We switched her to loose braids, added pre workout dry shampoo, and reduced her washing schedule. Three months later she said, "My temples are filling in and I can keep my workout routine." About seventy percent of my active clients see improvement once we remove tension and reduce overwashing.

Elspeth from Pacific Springs

Elspeth swims three times per week, but her extensions were deteriorating fast. Chlorine was breaking them down. We implemented the pre wetting and conditioner barrier method, added a silicone swim cap, and shortened her heat styling routine. After four months her extensions were lasting almost twice as long. She told me, "I had no idea how much the pool was damaging my hair." This pattern is incredibly common and completely preventable.

Marjorie from Shadow Ridge

Marjorie was avoiding her workouts because she hated washing and restyling her hair afterward. We created a routine using cool air drying, targeted rinsing, and dry shampoo. Six weeks later she said, "I am working out again and my hair looks better than it did when I was washing every day." Many women do not realize that overwashing creates far more dryness than sweat ever could.
