What Really Happens at a Hair Consultation? Your First Step to Fuller Hair

When women call our studio, the conversation often starts the same way.

“I keep looking at your photos,” one caller told me recently, “but I am terrified to book because I do not even know what happens at a consultation.”

My name is Angela Olander, and at The Bespoke Crown in West Omaha, all I do is help women with thinning hair and hair loss feel like themselves again. A consultation here is not a test and not a sales pitch. It is simply a private, honest conversation where we figure out what is really going on with your hair and what options actually fit your life.

To show you what that looks like in real life, let me introduce you to two women whose journeys started with that same nervous first step.

“I Almost Canceled”: Renata’s First-Consultation Nerves

Renata had booked online for a complimentary consultation, then almost talked herself out of coming in.

She was 47, managed a busy accounting team near Oakview Mall, and had two kids in sports. When she walked into our studio, she laughed and said, “I nearly stayed in the parking lot. I thought you were going to tell me I did everything wrong with my hair.”

We sat in our private room and I asked her what made her schedule.

“When I pull my hair back, I see scalp I never used to see,” she said, touching the top of her head. “I do not want huge extensions or a wig. I just want to stop feeling like my hair is disappearing.”

What We Talked About

Instead of jumping straight to solutions, we talked through her story.

She told me about:

  • Years of blonding and flat irons on rushed mornings
  • A stressful stretch at work where self-care had taken a back seat
  • Noticing more hair in the shower drain, but mostly that her part and crown looked “see-through”

Then I took a gentle, hands-on look at her hair and scalp. Her scalp was healthy, with no redness or flaking. She still had good density through the sides and back, but her crown and part were definitely thinner. The mid-lengths felt dry and a little rough, the classic combination of chemical and heat wear over time.

“Here is the good news,” I told her. “You still have a lot of great hair. We just need a two-part plan: build strength in what you have and add very strategic coverage where you are thinning.”

I could see her shoulders drop a little with relief. “So you do not think I am a lost cause,” she joked.

“Not even close,” I said.

The Plan We Built Together

For Renata, extensions alone were not the best choice because most of her loss was concentrated right along the part. She needed coverage on top, not just fullness through the sides. We talked through a few options and landed on a very lightweight, custom hair system designed to sit on the thinning area and blend with her remaining hair.

To support her natural hair underneath, we also simplified her at-home routine:

  • A strengthening routine built around the L’anza Keratin Healing Oil collection to reinforce fragile strands
  • A heat routine with lower temperatures and better protection
  • A trimming schedule to slowly remove older, damaged ends

Nothing about this plan was “one size fits all.” It was built around her specific pattern of thinning and how much time she realistically had for maintenance.

Before she left, she said, “I thought you were going to tell me to buy a bunch of things and hope for the best. This actually feels like a plan I can follow.”

Installation Day And Beyond

A few weeks later, she came back for her custom system fitting. We color-matched it to her natural shade, added a touch of soft dimension, and then integrated it with her own hair so that it moved and parted naturally.

When I handed her the mirror at the end, she went very quiet.

“I have not seen this much hair around my face since my thirties,” she said finally. “But it still looks like me.”

That was the goal.

At her eight-week follow-up, we cleaned and adjusted the system and checked her own hair. Her natural strands already felt a little stronger from the new routine.

“The consult was the hardest part,” she admitted. “Once I sat down and we talked, everything after that felt simple. I wish I had done it a year ago instead of just avoiding photos.”

A Different Path: Isolde’s Search For Volume, Not Coverage

Where Renata was most worried about the top of her head, Isolde had a different story.

She was 39, worked in healthcare near Zorinsky Lake, and came in wearing her hair in a low ponytail. “I feel like my ponytail has been on a diet,” she said with a half smile. “It is not that I have bald spots. Everything is just… less.”

She had always had fine hair, but after two pregnancies and a stressful few years, her density had dropped. Her scalp did not show much, but her lob cut fell flat and stringy through the ends.

Turning A Consultation Into A Custom Plan

We started her consult just like Renata’s: talking. I asked what she wanted to feel when she looked in the mirror.

“I do not need mermaid hair,” she said. “I just want my hair to look the way it used to on a good day. A little thicker. Less fragile.”

Her scalp looked healthy and her density, while reduced, was still good enough to safely support extensions. She was blow-drying several times a week and using a mix of drugstore “volumizing” products that gave a bit of short-term thickness but left her hair dry by day two.

Together, we decided her best fit was Invisible Bead Extensions® for volume, not length. One or two rows, cut to her current length, could quietly fill out the sides and back without changing who she was.

We also paired this with a simple strengthening plan so her own hair could improve under the extensions instead of getting weaker.

What Renata And Isolde’s Consultations Had In Common

Their hair stories were different, but their consultations shared the same structure:

  • We listened first. Both women were nervous. By the time they left, they felt heard and had a clear path forward.
  • We focused on health. We only recommended methods that would protect the fragile hair they still had.
  • We were honest. We talked about cost, maintenance, and what results they could realistically expect, not just what looks good on Instagram.

That is what a real consultation should be: not a quick five-minute chat, but a thoughtful conversation that ends with a plan you actually understand.

Your Consultation, Step By Step

Every consultation is unique, but most follow a similar rhythm. Here is what you can expect when you sit down with me at The Bespoke Crown.

1. Your Story

We start with your words, not mine. I will ask:

  • What are you noticing that concerns you?
  • What have you tried already, and how did it make you feel?
  • What does “better” look like in your mind?

You do not need the perfect vocabulary. “My ponytail feels skinny” is just as helpful as any technical term.

2. A Hands-On Look At Your Hair

Next, I take a hands-on look at your hair and scalp. I am checking your density in different areas, your hair’s texture and condition, and how your scalp looks. This tells me what your hair can safely handle and which techniques are off the table.

3. Creating A Plan Together

Once we have both pieces, we connect them. Maybe that looks like:

  • A custom hair system for top or crown thinning, like Renata
  • Invisible Bead Extensions for all-over volume, like Isolde
  • Or sometimes, starting with a focused strengthening routine and revisiting enhancements later

You will leave knowing:

  • Which options are right for you
  • What each one costs and how often you would come in
  • What you can do at home between visits to protect your investment

No guessing. No vague promises. Just a clear, honest roadmap.

Your Consultation Questions, Answered

A few questions come up again and again when women are thinking about booking.

Is the consultation really free and pressure-free?
Yes. The consult is about information and clarity. Some women are ready to move forward right away. Others email me months later when they are ready. Both are completely fine.

What if I feel embarrassed about my hair?
You would be surprised how many women say that as they sit down. This studio exists specifically for thinning hair and hair loss. You are not the “worst case” I have seen, and you will never be judged here.
