Why Am I Losing My Hair? Real Answers from an Omaha Stylist

When you're losing hair, you desperately want to know why. I hear this question almost every day here at the salon. You want to understand what's happening. You want to know if you can stop it. You just want to feel less confused and helpless about it all.

My name is Molly Graham, and at The Bespoke Crown, I help women navigate this every single day. While every woman's situation is different, there are usually identifiable causes behind hair loss. Understanding yours is the first real step toward finding a solution that works.

Let me walk you through what I've learned from working with hundreds of women dealing with this.

Hormones Are Usually the Main Story

For so many of my clients, especially women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, hormones are the culprit. Your hair follicles are incredibly sensitive to what's happening hormonally in your body. When things shift, your hair shifts with it.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Estrogen is basically your hair's best friend. It helps keep your hair in the growth phase longer. As you enter perimenopause and menopause, your estrogen levels drop. Your hair doesn't all fall out at once. Instead, the growth phase gets shorter, and over time, each follicle produces thinner, shorter hair.

I worked with a client named Karen who came to me about two years ago. She was 48 and going through perimenopause. She said, "Molly, I don't understand. I'm not losing handfuls of hair, but when I look at photos from five years ago, my hair was so much fuller."

That's exactly what this looks like. It's gradual, diffuse thinning over the top of the head. It sneaks up on you. Once we figured out that hormones were the main driver, we could build a plan that actually addressed what she needed.

Thyroid Issues

Your thyroid controls your body's metabolism, including your hair follicles. If your thyroid is underactive or overactive, it can push a lot of hairs into the resting phase at the same time. That leads to noticeable shedding.

I always tell clients: if you're experiencing hair loss, get your thyroid checked. It's a simple blood test and it rules out something that's very treatable.

Testosterone Sensitivity

This surprises people. Women naturally have testosterone, and some of us have follicles that are genetically more sensitive to a byproduct of it. Even with normal female hormone levels, this sensitivity can cause follicles to shrink. That's a key part of pattern hair loss in women.

Post-Pregnancy

The thick, beautiful hair a lot of women get during pregnancy is thanks to high estrogen. After delivery, estrogen drops fast. All that hair that was stuck in the growth phase shifts to the shedding phase at once.

It can be alarming. I had a client, Jessica, who called me four months after having her baby. She was panicking because her hair was coming out in the shower. She thought something was seriously wrong.

I explained what was happening hormonally and assured her it was temporary. We worked on ways to support regrowth and manage the thinning in the meantime. Six months later, her hair was growing back in. But those first few months were really hard for her emotionally.

Nutritional Gaps

I have clients who eat really healthy but still struggle with their hair. The truth is, your body sees hair as non-essential. When it's low on key resources, it diverts them to vital organs first. Your hair gets whatever's left.

Iron Deficiency

This is huge, especially for menstruating women. You don't have to be clinically anemic to have hair loss from low iron. There's a marker called ferritin, which is your body's iron storage. If your ferritin levels are low, even if you're not anemic, your hair growth suffers.

I always ask clients if they've had their ferritin checked. Most of the time, they haven't. Their doctor tested for anemia, which came back normal, but nobody checked ferritin. Getting that level up can make a real difference.

Protein

Your hair is literally made of protein. If you're not getting enough, your body can't build strong, healthy strands. I see this sometimes with clients who've dramatically changed their diet without thinking about protein intake.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamin D, B12, and zinc all play important roles in the hair growth cycle. A deficiency in any of these can contribute to thinning.

Biotin gets a lot of attention, but true biotin deficiency is actually rare. It's usually these other nutrients that are the real problem.

Medical Conditions

Sometimes hair loss is your body signaling that something else is going on. It's always important to talk to your doctor to rule out underlying issues.

Some autoimmune conditions can cause the body to attack its own hair follicles. Scalp conditions can interfere with healthy growth. After major surgery or during chronic illness, your body focuses all its energy on healing and hair growth gets put on the back burner. You might see shedding a few months later.

Many common medications list hair loss as a side effect too.

One thing I help clients understand is that even after you treat an underlying medical condition, the hair doesn't always return to its former glory. That's okay. It's a situation where cosmetic solutions like extensions or custom hair systems can really help.

The Impact of Stress

Stress is a silent hair shedder. A major physical or emotional event, like a job loss, a death in the family, or severe illness, can shock your system.

Your body releases stress hormones that signal a large number of follicles to enter the resting phase prematurely. Here's the tricky part: the shedding doesn't happen right away. It usually occurs two to four months after the stressful event. That makes it really hard to connect the dots.

I had a client, Lisa, who came in last year dealing with significant shedding. She couldn't figure out why. As we talked, she mentioned that her father had passed away about three months earlier.

The timeline clicked. Her hair loss wasn't random. It was her body's response to that major stress. Understanding that helped her stop blaming herself and realize this was something her body was going through, not something she'd caused.

Environmental and Styling Damage

Living here in Omaha, we have harsh, dry winters and hot summers. That can weaken hair. Add years of heat styling, chemical coloring, and mineral buildup from hard water, and you get breakage.

This doesn't cause hair loss from the root, but it makes existing thin hair look even thinner. It breaks off at the ends and reduces the overall fullness you see and feel.

It's Rarely Just One Thing

Here's the most important thing I can tell you: for most women, it's not just one single cause. It's usually multiple factors creating a compounded effect.

You might have a genetic predisposition, combined with hormonal shifts, plus a period of high stress that depleted your iron. Any one of those things might not have been enough to notice on its own. But together? They create a perfect storm.

This is why a one-size-fits-all solution rarely works. This is why personalized assessment matters so much.

Karen, the client I mentioned earlier going through perimenopause? When we dug deeper, we found out she also had low ferritin and had been under enormous work stress for about six months. It wasn't just the hormones. It was all of it together.

Once we understood the full picture, we could address what was addressable and manage what wasn't.

What You Can Actually Do

Understanding the cause is the first step. Some causes are fixable. You can work with a doctor to correct a nutritional deficiency or manage a thyroid condition.

Other causes are manageable but not fixable. You can't stop menopause. You can't change your genetic code. For those realities, you need solutions that work with your biology, not against it.

That's where hair enhancement comes in. We can use custom extensions or systems to add back the volume and fullness that life has taken away. You get to have hair you love without fighting your body.

Knowing your "why" gives you power. It helps you stop blaming yourself and start finding real, effective solutions.
