Hi, I'm Angela. As a stylist here at The Bespoke Crown, I talk to women every single day who are frustrated with their hair.
Just last week, my client Sarah came in completely overwhelmed. She said, "Angela, I've been reading all these articles about 12-step hair routines and using five different products. I don't have time for that. I have two kids and a full-time job. I need something simple that actually works."
I get it. You're busy with work, family, and just life itself. You don't have time for some complicated routine, and honestly, thinning hair doesn't need all that fuss.
What it does need is consistency with the right basics. The daily routine I recommend for my clients takes less than 10 minutes but makes a huge difference in your hair's health and how it looks.
It's about working smarter, not harder.
Your Morning Routine for Quick Volume (5 to 7 Minutes)
Let me tell you what I taught Sarah, because it changed everything for her.
First, prep your hair
If you aren't washing your hair today, start with a little dry shampoo right at the roots. This soaks up any oil from overnight and gives you instant texture to work with.
Then gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb. Always start from your ends and work your way up to the roots. Never, ever rip a brush through your hair from the top down.
I learned this lesson the hard way years ago. I had a client named Jennifer who was brushing her hair aggressively from root to tip every morning. When she came in for a trim, I could see significant breakage all through her hair.
I felt terrible that I hadn't asked her about her brushing routine earlier. Now I make sure every client knows the right way to detangle. That's a recipe for breakage, especially on finer hair.
A light mist of a heat protectant is a must if you plan on using any hot tools.
Next, create volume
This is my favorite trick, and it's what made the biggest difference for Sarah.
Flip your head upside down and blast the roots with your dryer on a cool setting for about 30 seconds. This wakes up any product from the day before and gives you incredible lift. Use your fingers to fluff the roots as you dry.
When you flip back up, you'll see a big difference.
Sarah texted me the day after I showed her this technique. She said, "I can't believe I've never done this before. It took 30 seconds and my hair has so much more volume."
Just use a soft brush to smooth the surface layer. For a finishing touch, a light texture spray at the crown will help hold that volume. If your ends feel a little dry, use a tiny drop of smoothing serum only on the tips. Keep it away from your scalp, or it will weigh your hair down instantly.
My client Diana made this mistake. She was putting serum all over her hair, including at the roots. When she came in for her appointment, her hair looked flat and greasy even though she'd just washed it that morning.
I said, "Diana, are you putting serum on your roots?"
She said, "Yeah, I thought I was supposed to put it everywhere."
I showed her the right way, just on the ends. The next time she came in, her hair looked completely different. She said, "That one change made such a huge difference."
The Evening Routine That Protects Your Hair (3 to 5 Minutes)
What you do at night is just as important as your morning routine. This is all about gentle care and setting your hair up for success the next day.
On wash days
Use lukewarm water. Super hot water can be harsh and strip delicate hair of its natural oils.
My client Margaret loved scalding hot showers. She came to me complaining that her hair was dry and breaking. When I asked about her shower temperature, she said, "Oh, I like it really hot."
I explained that the hot water was probably contributing to her dryness. She was skeptical, but she tried cooler water for two weeks. When she came back, she said, "My hair feels so much softer. I can't believe the water temperature made that much difference."
Concentrate your shampoo right on the scalp where oil and product build up. You don't need to scrub the lengths and ends. As you rinse, the suds will gently cleanse them. Use your fingertips, not your nails, to give yourself a little scalp massage. This feels amazing and helps stimulate blood flow.
When it's time for conditioner, apply it only from the mid-lengths to the ends. Putting conditioner on your roots is the fastest way to get flat, greasy-looking hair.
Let it sit for at least two or three minutes so it can actually do its job. A quick rinse with cool water at the very end helps seal the hair cuticle, which adds shine.
After your shower
Gently squeeze the excess water out. Don't rub your hair with a rough towel. That friction causes frizz and damage. A microfiber towel is a great alternative.
Before bed, if your hair is dry, put it in a loose braid or a gentle twist on top of your head and secure it with a soft scrunchie. This stops it from tangling while you sleep.
A silk or satin pillowcase is another small change that makes a big impact by reducing friction.
Sarah started using a silk pillowcase after I recommended it. She texted me two weeks later and said, "I wake up with so much less tangling now. Why didn't anyone tell me about this years ago?"
Finding Your Perfect Wash Schedule
One of the most common questions I get is, "How often should I wash my hair?"
My client Rachel was washing her hair every single day. She came in complaining that her hair looked flat and lifeless. I asked about her routine and she said, "I wash it every morning."
I said, "Rachel, you're probably stripping all the natural oils. Let's try every other day and see what happens."
She was nervous about it. She said, "Won't my hair look greasy?"
I gave her a good dry shampoo and showed her how to use it. Two weeks later, she came back and said, "My hair has so much more body now. I can't believe washing it less made it look better."
For most women with thin hair, washing every two to three days is the sweet spot. Washing every day can strip away the natural oils that protect your hair, while waiting too long can lead to a greasy, flat look.
Listen to your hair. If your scalp is itchy or it genuinely feels oily, it's time to wash.
How to Layer Products Without Weighing Hair Down
With thin hair, less is always more. The order you apply products matters.
On damp hair, start with a volumizing mousse at the roots. Then apply a heat protectant through the lengths. After styling with heat, you can use a texture spray at the roots for extra lift and finish with a light, flexible hold hairspray.
It's better to use a small amount of a few products than to overload your hair with one heavy one.
My client Emily was using way too much product. When she came in, her hair felt sticky and looked weighed down. I watched her show me her routine and she was using about three times the amount she needed.
I said, "Emily, you only need about a dime-sized amount. What you're using would be good for hair twice as thick as yours."
She cut back on the amount and her hair looked so much better. She said, "I was wasting so much product and making my hair look worse at the same time."
Making Your Routine Work in Omaha
Living here in Nebraska means our hair has to deal with some wild weather swings. Your routine needs to adapt.
In the summer, the humidity can be a real challenge. My client Caroline goes running at Zorinsky Lake almost every morning in the summer. She came to me frustrated because her hair would look great when she left the house, but by the time she got back from her run, it was a frizzy mess.
I recommended adding an anti-frizz serum to her routine and using a clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks to remove any sweat and product buildup.
She came back a month later and said, "The serum made such a difference. I can actually go for a run without dreading what my hair will look like after."
Then comes winter. The dry, cold air can suck the moisture right out of your hair. This is the time to add a weekly hydrating treatment and maybe an anti-static spray for daily use.
Running a humidifier in your bedroom at night can make a huge difference for both your skin and your hair.
Omaha also has notoriously hard water, which can leave mineral deposits on your hair, making it feel dull and limp.
My client Jessica lives near Oakview Mall and had been complaining about her hair feeling heavy and dull. I asked if she'd ever used a chelating shampoo and she said, "What's that?"
I explained that it removes mineral buildup from hard water. She tried it once and texted me the same day. She said, "Oh my God, my hair feels so light and clean. I didn't realize how much buildup I had."
Using a chelating shampoo once a month can help remove that buildup and restore shine.
When Your Routine Isn't Enough
A great daily routine is foundational. It will maximize the health and appearance of the hair you have, prevent damage, and give you better styling results over time.
But sometimes a routine isn't enough.
Sarah, the client I mentioned at the beginning, followed the routine perfectly for three months. Her hair was healthier and had more volume than before. But she was still frustrated.
She came in and said, "Angela, I'm doing everything right. My hair looks better than it did. But I still want more fullness. I still see more scalp than I'd like."
I said, "Sarah, you're doing everything perfectly. But if you're still not happy with the density, the issue isn't your care routine. It's that you need more hair."
We talked about hair enhancements. She was nervous at first. She said, "Is that giving up?"
I said, "No. A routine optimizes what you have. Professional hair enhancements add what you need. It's not giving up. It's choosing to have the hair you want."
She got custom invisible bead extensions six months ago. When I finished installing them and styling her hair, she stared at herself in the mirror and started crying.
She said, "This is what I've been trying to create with products and styling for years. I should have done this sooner."
Last week she texted me a photo from a work event. She said, "I'm not thinking about my hair at all. I'm just enjoying myself. Thank you."
That's what good hair should do. Let you forget about it and just live.
